When mold testing is actually worth it
Mold testing can help document a problem, but it is not always necessary. Visible mold and a known moisture source often speak for themselves — the priority is fixing the leak or dampness behind the mold, not proving its exact type.
Testing becomes most useful in two situations: when mold is hidden inside walls or ducts and you need to confirm it, or when a landlord flatly denies there is any mold and you want independent proof. If you can already see and smell it, a lab test usually is not what stands between you and a livable home.
If you do decide to test, treat the report as one piece of a larger record. Keep it with dated photos, your written reports to the landlord, and any medical records.
