Your federal rights are the same everywhere. What differs by state is how much a routine encounter with local police is likely to reach federal immigration authorities — and California and Arizona are not close on this.

What changes in California
- Local police and federal enforcement: California limits the extent to which state and local agencies may assist federal immigration enforcement. That does not make anyone immune, and it does not bind federal officers operating in California.
- What it does not change: It does not affect anything at the border or in a federal facility, and it does not stop federal agents from acting. Treat the protections as narrowing one route, not closing all of them.
- The rights that never vary: The right to stay silent, the right not to consent to a search, and the right not to sign anything you do not understand apply in every state and at every encounter.
