Where We Practice

One office, three states. Law Office of Joseph L. Woods, APC is licensed in California, Arizona and New Mexico, and the office is in Gilbert, Arizona. Below is what that actually means for someone deciding whether to call — including the part most firms leave out, which is when being local matters and when it does not.

The office

States we are licensed in

A lawyer may only practice in a state where they are admitted. That is the line that matters — not where an office sits.

Does it matter that the office is in Arizona?

For an Arizona matter, it is convenient. For a California or New Mexico matter, it matters far less than people expect, and it is worth saying why rather than pretending otherwise.

A case is filed where the case belongs — generally where the injury happened, where the defendant is, or where the policy was issued — not where your lawyer keeps a desk. Most of what happens between the first call and a resolution is correspondence, records, written discovery and negotiation, none of which requires anyone to be in the same room. Depositions and hearings are routinely handled remotely or by traveling to them.

Where proximity genuinely helps is at the beginning, when you want to hand someone a box of paperwork and talk it through, and at the end, if a matter goes to trial. If you are in California or New Mexico and that first conversation is what you want, it can happen by phone or video — and it is free either way.
