Clues that point to hidden mold
Hidden mold often gives itself away through a musty, earthy smell, unexplained stains, bubbling or peeling paint, warped surfaces, or allergy-like symptoms that ease when you leave home. It commonly hides behind walls, under flooring, above ceilings, and around plumbing.
You cannot always see hidden mold, but you can look for its clues. A persistent musty odor is one of the most reliable signs. Discoloration, paint that will not stay flat, soft or warped drywall, and old water stains all point to moisture where mold can grow. Areas near leaks, under sinks, behind appliances, and around windows are common hiding spots.
