Sexual Abuse Checklist

Steps You Can Consider, at Your Pace

Whatever you did or did not do was okay, and there is no single right way to respond. If it helps, here are some steps you can consider — only if and when you are ready, with your safety and comfort first.

  1. Reach out for support

Consider reaching out to a trusted person, a counselor, or a confidential survivor hotline. You do not have to go through this alone, and support is available whether or not you take any legal step.

  2. Care for yourself first

Your safety and wellbeing come before anything else. There is no step here that matters more than that, and no timeline you have to meet.

  3. Keep anything that feels okay to keep

If it feels okay, any records, messages, or notes about what happened can help later — but there is no pressure, and a claim can still be possible if you have nothing.

  4. Know that reporting is your choice

You can report to authorities if you choose, but a civil claim does not require it. Whether, when, and to whom you report is entirely up to you.

  5. Talk to someone about your options

Whenever you are ready — today or much later — a free, confidential conversation can explain your options with no obligation and no pressure.

The deadlines and rules depend on your state

The steps above apply wherever you were hurt. Filing deadlines, fault rules, and limits on damages differ by state — pick yours for what applies to sexual abuse.
