Information to Get From a Truck Driver
After a truck crash, the usual driver details are not enough. The information below helps identify every company that may be responsible — often the key to a truck case.
The driver
Full name, phone, and commercial driver's license (CDL) number.
The company
The name on the truck doors and the USDOT or MC number. The driver may work for a carrier separate from whoever owns the truck.
Insurance
The insurance company and policy number for the truck and, if different, the carrier.
Truck and trailer
License plates and any unit or trailer numbers for both the tractor and the trailer, which can be owned by different companies.
Cargo and route
What the truck was carrying and where it was headed, if the driver will say — it can point to a shipper or loader.
