Truck Accident Scene Evidence Checklist
Evidence at a truck crash scene disappears fast, and some of the most valuable details are unique to trucks. If you are safe and able, this checklist helps you capture what matters.
Photos and video
Wide shots of the whole scene plus close-ups of both vehicles, damage, skid marks, debris, and any spilled cargo. Photograph the truck from several angles.
Identify the truck and company
Capture the company name on the doors, the USDOT or MC number, the license plates of both the tractor and trailer, and any trailer or unit numbers. These identify who to hold responsible.
The driver's details
The driver's name, commercial license, and the insurance information, plus the make and type of truck.
Witnesses
Names and phone numbers of anyone who saw the crash. Witnesses become very hard to find later.
Conditions and response
Note the date, time, weather, and road conditions while fresh, and get the officer's name, the crash report number, and any citations.
